Chapter Eleven

Tobias drifted through his home, avoiding the rooms where people were sure to congregate. He wasn’t fit for company. His mind was racing with worry for Malik and his situation. For his mother and her accusations. Everything tangled together in his head as he changed the sheets in his room. The scent of Malik filled his nose, and Tobias bit back the moan of pain and fear.

What if Malik was no longer capable of leaving his ship? What if someone found it and reported it to the government? What if his mother came back as though she was spying on the house and she was going to berate him?

So many questions emerged that he was stuck at a standstill. His mind seemed frozen by the state of his life, and he couldn’t process anything. So, he did laundry and tidied his room so Malik would be proud of him.

“Tobias, you have to be at work soon, remember? You have the late shift,” Rory murmured as they peeked into the room. “What’s wrong?”

“I don’t know what I’m doing,” Tobias whispered as he stood in the centre of his room, still caught in that dangerous thought loop.

“You’re going to go and be a grand geek so that moms and dads learn what makes their little geeks explode with happiness. And when you come home, we’ll have doctored hot chocolate and more cookies. Malik’ll be back, right?” Rory steered Tobias to the closet, where they grabbed a black-collared shirt and passed it to Tobias. They searched deep in the small space and returned with an elf ears headband. Rory set it on Tobias’s head while leading Tobias through the house. “Go, be a good shopkeeper.”

The small hobby store that Tobias and Rory worked at was hopping for the whole day. The store was filled with board games, video games, and the various marketable items, like character figurines and accessories. Sections of the small store had comic books and graphic novels while another space was devoted to figurines. The store was niche, but a lot of people enjoyed dropping by, especially during the holiday season. It was as Rory said. So many parents came in, bewildered by the toys and books their children asked for. Tobias blessed them for the effort. He was proud that people were willing to step out of the box for them. They wished to know how to make their kids happy, and his heart soared with every success.

By the time the store closed, Tobias was dead on his feet. His throat was sore from talking so much, and all he desired was sleep. There were still a few more weekends 'til Christmas, and the days were soon to get worse.

Tobias zombie-walked into the house and was given hot chocolate when he stepped into the kitchen. “Is Malik here?”

“No, haven’t seen him. Sorry, Tobe. How was the day?” Rory asked softly.

“Typical parents, as always. Never sure of what Billy or Sally want, but they’ll listen to whatever I suggest.” Tobias sipped his hot chocolate and groaned.
